Have you ever witnessed a situation in which your friend/family member/classmate/lab-mate/colleague/stranger was made to feel uncomfortable by someone else’s comments or actions? Did you want to speak up and help, but did not know how? Situations like these are more common than you think- some may seem ‘harmless’, whereas some can seem outright dangerous.

A bystander is anyone who notices any situation unfold. An active bystander is someone who recognizes and acknowledges a challenging situation and chooses to speak up or offer help. But it is also difficult to be an active bystander- how do we know when to step in? What help do we offer?

This workshop hopes to empower you with exactly those skills. Led by Daena Giardella, this interactive workshop will train you to respond to bias, harassment, micro-aggressions actively and effectively, so that you can stand up for others and for yourself. Participants will learn and practice skills interactively. By being active bystanders, we can work together towards creating an empowered community that does not tolerate any sort of bias or harassment!
